Spend New Year’s Eve in Krakow | Happy Sylwester!

In Poland, New Year’s Eve is known as Sylwester, and it’s a party event not to be missed. Krakow is famous across Europe for being one of the best places to welcome the new year. With epic music and singing performances in the main square, firework displays along the river, and lots of free-flowing beer, it’s a huge celebration you won’t forget.

Main Market Square – the life of the party

Central Square, or Rynek Glowny is right in the middle of the city’s Old Town. Every year, it’s decorated extravagantly with sparkling lights throughout the festive season. On New Year’s Eve, a stunning free music show is put on by Polish and international musicians for the general public. From 8pm until after midnight, a huge party kicks off, with lights, lasers, and plenty of booze. After the show finishes, head to any of the city’s bars or clubs and continue the party until the early hours.

Christmas Markets – handmade crafts and street food

In recent years, Krakow’s famous Christmas markets have been extended into the first week of January. So, if you’re visiting to celebrate the new year, you’ll still get to enjoy them. In the central Market Square, around 80 wooden huts are set up, displaying an endless variety of handcrafted items, souvenirs, décor, and traditional Polish street food. Before the party kicks off, dinner at the Christmas market will start off the evening on the right food.

Firework Displays – see it wherever you are

Wherever you are in Krakow, you’re guaranteed to see the iconic firework display that takes over the city when the clock strikes midnight. To get the best view, we recommend grabbing a spot near the river, or on the market square. Krakow’s firework displays are unforgettable, filling the sky with all sorts of cool shapes and colour combinations.

Polish Food – the ultimate hangover cure

The day after your epic Sylwester or New Year’s Eve party in Krakow, you’ll want to get your hands on some Polish food – it’s known as the perfect hangover cure! Krakow is full of traditional Polish restaurants and cafes with friendly service, and homecooked comfort food. A steaming bowl of Borscht or potato pancakes is the ideal way to celebrate New Year’s Day, recover from the night before, and warm up on a cold day.
